School Planning Aggravation!

Our plans for Landon's school for the fall have been thrown for a loop this week, and I am tired of thinking about it and just want to pull the covers over my head and never come out! Landon is finishing a pre-calculus class (which consists of college algebra and trigonometry) and will be ready to take calculus in the fall. He is also ready for physics as far as science goes. We had always planned for him to dual enroll at our local community college when he got to this point.

However, the branch of CFCC that is five minutes from our house doesn't offer either of these classes AT ALL! To take them, we would have to go to the main campus which is a 45 minute drive from us. That would mean I'd have to drive Landon there, since he does not have his license yet (and won't get it until he gets a job and can afford his own insurance). On top of that, they only have one section of Calculus I with Analytical Geometry even at the main campus, and it meets four days a week! How in the world am I supposed to homeschool 3 other kids while spending all my time driving Landon back and forth to class.

And to add insult to injury, CFCC requires Calculus I as a prerequisite for Physics (even though PHCC, another community college near us) requires only Pre-Calculus as a pre- OR co-requisite. Why the big difference? PHCC has both of these classes at their campus about 30 minutes from us, and they both meet only 2 days a week. There is a slight overlap, however, with the Physics lab and the Calculus class one day. We are contemplating dual enrolling there instead of CFCC. However, that will probably mean going to the main campus next semester which is even further.

I honestly want to get in bed, pull the covers over my head, and never come out. Sigh!

Linda, does either campus offer the courses online or a hybrid course which is a combo of online and classroom?

Isn't the PHHC campus about an hour and 1/2 away? I was going to teach there at one time but the drive was too much.

I hope it all works out...for whatever reason it was supposed to go this way..maybe God thought you needed some rest and relaxation under your covers for awhile ;)

One step at a time! Things will look brighter in the a.m.

LOL, Danielle! The PHCC Brooksville campus is only 30 minutes, possibly less from here. New Port Richey would be about 1hr. 15 min. These classes are offered at Brooksville now. Neither class is online or hybrid unfortunately. We still haven't decided what to do. :( He may just have to take other classes that are at Lecanto until he can drive. He needs to do Calculus, though, because you forget so much when you take time off from math.

Linda, I can commiserate with you. We are praying about alternative plans too. It is frustrating. Matt is unable to drive until he can afford his own insurance. The problem there is that he hasn't been able to find a job. Economy? Or is because he's a "homeschooler?" Ack...I'm a bit worried. I think if we were in a more rural area he'd have a better chance. Competition for jobs is SO high here and in our neck of the woods, speaking Spanish is preferred. (And he doesn't)

I keep reminding myself that the Lord has a plan and I need to be faithfully patient. But that can be hard sometimes.

Anyways, I understand!

That's the same boat we're in, Yvonne. Landon is eligible to get his license in a couple weeks, but he needs to get a job to pay for his own insurance. He hasn't even looked for a job, yet, as his schedule is busy. I'm not sure how he'd fit it in, especially if he has to do all that driving for school. It's a Catch-22.

It DOES become a juggling act and a matter of choices as far as time goes as they get older...college courses, jobs, ministry, youth groups, CAP...I understand.

Praying that options for school are clearer by now....Jamin discovered some online courses at a private college and went that route...of course it wans't cheap but it was a good option for him. LOL This allowed him to work and continue with the ministry he wanted to be a part of while taking "dual credits"...the other way simply wans't working for us.

Others of our kids haven't done dual credit at all.

One step at a time and it will all work out.

BTW we also don't do driver's license until they can pay for the insurance etc....and the rural areas aren't much easier for finding jobs for young men....the girls found them quickly....boys took longer....seems to have to do with the fact that they have no hiring preference. ::sigh::

Praying.

Just knowing that so many of you are in the same boat is so helpful. And DeEtta, just knowing that you are praying makes the burden feel lighter as well!

We're in a slightly different boat. We live too far out in the boonies for our dd to get a job to pay for her insurance, but we're so looking forward to her getting her license so she can take over some of the driving that I have to do now. We paid for our oldest dd's ins until she moved out because she was such a tremendous help to us and saved me a bunch of $$ and time doing errands and things for me while she was in town. I imagine we'll do the same for our 2nd dd. Because she'll be taking over some of what I would do, we'll pay her ins and consider it in lieu of a job so to speak.

Just wanted to comment that jobs aren't any more easy to come by in rural areas.... although hard working boys are fairly well sought out here in our part of the country... farm/ranch hands.

Have you considered the option of acceralated distance learning? Not as economical, of course...but there are some good options out there, like Thomas Edison College. What does Landon plan to major in?

Michelle, Landon plans to major in engineering of some sort. Although he has already CLEPped some courses and will do a few more in the future, a college like Thomas Edison is not a good option for an engineering or science major despite what they claim. He's probably headed for UF and they only accept so many transfer credits.
