5th Annual Meahl Family Christmas Event

Six years ago after the annual "exchange of the gift cards" with Greg's family, I suggested that we try something different the next Christmas. Everyone agreed to attend an event together rather than exchange gifts. It's been a blast ever since: Dixie Stampede, the Melting Pot (the year Carys was 11 months and unlikely to sit through a show), a dinner train trip, and the Sleuth Mystery Dinner Theatre.

This year we headed to the Gaylord Palms resort in Orlando for ICE!

It was cool - literally! After eating dinner at Smokey Bones...

we donned the provided parkas and headed into the 9° zone. They took this picture on the way in.

Back row: Gran (Greg's mom), Uncle Jeff (Greg's brother), me, Greg, Chase, Landon, and Gerren
Front row: Kay (Jeff's wife), Carys, Rebekah, and AJ (Jeff and Kay's kids)

You were not supposed to touch the ice. However, the had a designated touching spot on the way in.

There were also several places where they put cushions so you could sit.

That Santa is made from ice. I have no idea how they colored the ice. The sculptures were unbelievable and life-sized including a carousel...

and a nativity.

There were other things to see and do at the Gaylord Palms that didn't require a ticket. They had a display of wreaths from each county in Florida. Here's Chase with the Citrus County wreath.

They also had the atrium decked out and we caught the end of an incredible show there as well. They even had free hot chocolate.

It was another fabulous event, and we are building memories rather than just buying stuff. I can't wait until next year!

The boys and their grandpa went to Ice at Gaylord Palms. They really enjoyed the hotel, the exhibit...everything. They didn't however, take any pictures (except for the one with Mr. North Wind) and so I was glad to see yours! : )

No, we haven't. My kids would love that. I wonder if tickets would be affordable!

That looks amazing! What a great idea to share these things as a family.

This is really neat! I love the tradition too - not to buy gifts but to create a memory. Nice.

AWESOME! I haven't been able to convince our parents to go the no gift route in exchange for an event, but we're getting closer. This year the main present for each of us from one of the grandparents is a ticket to Cirque de Soliel when it comes to town in March. Sometime I want to go do the Polar Express train thing in OR. I'll have to remember this ICE thing. is it always in FL?

Cynthia, it is always in Florida, but it's at the Gaylord Palms. There are other Gaylord hotels around the country. They may have something similar. I don't know if there's one near you, but you could google Gaylord and see.
